Cleveland's weather is hard on roofs. Bitter winters, spring storms, humid summers, and fall leaf accumulation all take their toll. The good news: a little preventive maintenance goes a long way. Here's a seasonal checklist to keep your roof in top shape.
Spring Checklist (March–May)
After Cleveland's harsh winter, spring is the most important time for a roof inspection.
- Inspect shingles for winter damage: cracking, curling, or missing shingles
- Check flashing around chimneys, skylights, and vents for gaps or lifting
- Clear gutters and downspouts of winter debris
- Look for granule loss in gutters (sign of aging shingles)
- Check attic for moisture, mold, or daylight penetration
- Inspect soffits and fascia for rot or pest damage
Summer Checklist (June–August)
Summer is the best time for repairs since dry conditions allow proper adhesion and curing.
- Trim overhanging tree branches that could damage the roof in storms
- Check for moss or algae growth and treat if present
- Inspect caulking around all penetrations
- Schedule any needed repairs while weather is favorable
- Check attic ventilation to prevent heat buildup
Fall Checklist (September–November)
Fall prep is critical for surviving Cleveland winters.
- Clean gutters after leaves fall (October/November)
- Inspect and repair any damaged shingles before winter
- Check attic insulation levels to prevent ice dams
- Ensure all flashing is sealed and secure
- Remove any debris from roof valleys
Winter Checklist (December–February)
Minimize roof access in winter, but watch for these warning signs.
- Monitor for ice dam formation along eaves
- After heavy snowfall, consider professional snow removal for heavy accumulation
- Watch for icicles — they indicate poor attic insulation/ventilation
- Check attic after major storms for new leaks or moisture
The most important thing you can do for your roof is keep your gutters clean. Clogged gutters cause water to back up under shingles and are a leading cause of ice dams in Cleveland winters.
